Not too long ago, a man by the name of Buckminster Fuller (1895-1983) was known for designing geodesic domes, which used minimal resources while creating a maximum interior space. He was an inventor, poet, philosopher, mathematician, architect and engineer. Fuller urged us to think globally and act conscientiously to better mankind through a "design revolution”. His legacy has inspired artists, engineers and thinkers around the world.
Later, two art students at the University of Kansas painted rocks and dropped them from rooftops onto the street below. After watching the surprised reactions of passersby, they developed the concept of ‘Drop Art’. Drop Art led to the creation of Drop City, an experimental artists’ community founded in 1965 near Trinidad, Colorado. Fuller’s geodesic domes became the structure of choice for these experimental Drop City artists. The Drop City community later gained the support of Buckminster Fuller for their resource-friendly structures and experimental approach to art, architecture and design.
Our urban gallery space emerged under the legacies of Buckminster Fuller and the original Drop City artists as well as the influence of this developing neighborhood.
Early in 2007, a 1,400 square foot industrial space became available to us; it was a blank slate with concrete floors and exposed pipes in the heart of South Lake Union. As the local buildings grow from two stories to twenty, the neighborhood rapidly shifts to house new businesses, restaurants and luxury condominiums. The skyline of our cityscape now creeps north, leaving a trail of construction pits and reconfigured traffic patterns. A mini-city has dropped like Seattle's rain onto our existing landscape. Change is evident and ongoing.
Drop City Gallery is located below the Glenn Richards showroom. It used to serve as a detail shop for sexy old cars and was also a metal fabrication shop. Walls have been built and painted, and lighting is in place. Our hope is to introduce an approachable venue for creative concepts, culture, and dialogue in our community. The new gallery curates, designs, engineers, and shows unique exhibitions every two months. Please participate, celebrate and join us as we begin this new adventure.
